I Will Follow Thee, My Saviour

Have you ever sung that old hymn, "Take up thy cross," the Savior said, "If thou wouldst My disciple be; Deny thyself, the world forsake, And humbly follow after Me."??? Such surrender is pictured!!! A life of utter commitment and service to Christ!

How many have read the inspiring story of 'Judith, the Martyred missionary of Russia'? "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up." Psa 27:10 The song 'Jesus, I my Cross Have Taken' was a balm to her weary soul! And also the chorus to the song 'I will follow Thee my Savior.'

Am I willing to say these words in the presence of our dear Lord and Savior and mean every word with every breath in my body? Am I willing to suffer everything for His name's sake? Have I ever denied myself for His glory, that He would be magnified? So many times we sing good hymns, with good words, we read good poems with great challenge, but we don't mean one bit of what we say! How is it? Is the life we now life in Christ not worth a little taste of the suffering He bore for us? For me? How can we have the fellowship of His suffering if we indulge in every pleasure and fun and fancy we have?

Eternal life is ours by Him! Why do I look for rewards now when only the rewards that are offered in eternity count? Only what's done for Christ will last!!! Nothing else!

I will follow Thee, my Savior,

Wheresoe'er my lot may be.

Where thou goest I will follow;

Yes, my Lord, I'll follow Thee.

Though the road be rough and thorny,

Trackless as the foaming sea,

Thou hast trod this way before me,

And I'll gladly follow Thee.

Though I meet with tribulations,

Sorely tempted though I be;

I remember Thou wast tempted,

And rejoice to follow Thee.

Though Thou leadest me through affliction,

Poor, forsaken though I be;

Thou wast destitute, afflicted,

And I only follow Thee.

Though to Jordan's rolling billows,

Cold and deep, Thou leadest me,

Thou hast crossed the waves before me,

And I still will follow Thee.

Refrain

I will follow Thee, my Saviour,

Thou didst shed Thy blood for me;

And though all men should forsake Thee;

By Thy grace I'll follow Thee.

Words by James Lawson Elginburg, 1886
